Dr Susan MacVicker 'The Mercy Ship in Africa'

Dr Susan MacVicar has lived in Gairloch for the last 6 years. She previously worked for 30 years as an Anaesthetist in the NHS most of these were spent as a Consultant at Monklands Hospital Airdrie. Took early retirement in 2006 but has been able to continue with some work on a locum basis. Having more free time has allowed her to organise 3 trips to work on the Africa Mercy, a hospital ship which provides health care for some of the poorest countries in the world. The talk will give a flavour of her experiences and outline the work done by the Mercy Ship Charity.

Willie MacRobbie 'Gruinard and Letterewe the Lairds and the Clearances'

The size and distribution of the population in the Loch Gruinard area was much influenced by the clearances and evictions carried out by the owners of the Gruinard and Letterewe estates throughout the nineteenth century. The clearances and evictions they carried out were numerous and cruel. The talk will go back into the history of the various owners of the land and discuss their role in the evictions.
