2010 Programme of Events
"Past and Present": An exhibition of old and new work by Rosanne Wiseman
27th March - 30th April
I was born in Fife and have always loved painting from an early age. So I’m told. My parents travelled about quite a bit and my last two years of higher education were gained at Hyndland Secondary School, Glasgow in the late 60’s. From there I was accepted for Glasgow School of Art, I dropped out at the beginning of my second year after which I got married and spent several years bringing up a family which left little time for painting. After completing an Art and Design course with the Open College of Arts I have got back gradually to painting. I draw inspiration from the old croft houses and the wonderful light in this part of the country. (Wester Ross). I enjoy painting landscapes and still life, mostly in oils, but like to experiment with other mediums. Rosanne Wiseman
Rosanne has previously exhibited at:
• art.tm (former Bank St. venue)
• an talla solais (Ullapool)
• Strathpeffer Pavilion
• Macmillan Art Sale
• Perfume Studio (Aultbea)
• Various local hotels, cafes and craft fairs.

"A Tangle of Sea and Shore, Wester Ross" Paintings by Lys Stevens
July 17th - August 13th
Preview Evening Friday 16th July
Lys studied drawing and painting and graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in the early seventies then qualified as an art specialist in secondary education. After working for some time in mainstream, Lys spent many happy and fulfilling years teaching art in Special Education.
Born in Perth, she is now a full time artist, sharing her time between Dalserf in South Lanarkshire and Gairloch, Wester Ross where her inspiration comes from.
Lys is happiest on a deserted Scottish beach, a field or glen, surrounded by colour and texture, finding endless inspiration in the interplay of land, sea and sky, light and weather. She is excited, calmed, always moved by a transient mood and is compelled to celebrate her involvement visually. She paints in acrylics and sometimes incorporates other materials sympathetic to the piece.
Lys is a member of the GSWA and SSA.
"Into the Wilderness" by Katherine Butler
21st August - 17th September
Preview Evening Friday 20th August
"Into the Wilderness" is the end result of an intensive four years study in Fashion Design for Industry BA (Hons), at Heriot-Watt University in the Scottish Borders. Organic and rugged, comprising of six original outfits, it encapsulates the mood and nature of the Scottish Highlands, focused mainly on the area of Gairloch and surrounding villages. Inspiration was gained in several areas - textures, colours, native animals, climate and tradition. These were interpreted through the fabrics chosen, the manufacturing techniques used and obviously the design and styling. The first steps began with the use of rough and raw Blackface sheep fleeces, going through processes of using natural dyes leading to the carding and spinning of the wool - this in turn led to hand-knitting and braiding to experiment with different structures. Ethically sourced skins and furs of native mammals were mixed with felted lambswool to create, overall, an exciting blend of texture and colour. Despite the strong traditional influences, the final result is high-end and contemporary, offering completely unique, one-off pieces with hand-crafted elements. "Urban Reiver" is an outfit designed and made for the 2009 competition "Bringing Home the Tartan" organised by the Scottish Archives and the Scotsman. The aim was to create an interesting and contemporary tartan based outfit. "Urban Reiver" draws on historical influences from the Border Reivers, romanticised bandits who plundered from both the Scots and the English. The fabrics (tartan, lambswool, leather and reindeer fur) helped to create this image, as well as details such as horses harnesses and helmets, which were interpreted into the waistcoat, hood, mask and straps. A modern element was added with the tight-fitting, long-sleeved jumper and low-slung trousers, hence the word "Urban" in the title. This creation won 2nd prize. Katherine currently works as a freelance graphic designer/illustrator.
